As my regulars will know, I set myself the task of painting an ADLG army in 6 weeks for the Scottish Open (held in December). Progress has been good so far, with another 4 units completed, first up are a couple of units of Medium Spearmen…

Shields
All my shields are transfers from Little Big Man Studios….they are fiddly, but fantastic. Once on, I always paint up to the edges in either metal or beige brown, depending on the shield type.
Basing
First, I pollyfilla the bases with ready mixed pollyfilla (slightly watered down), then I sprinkle with fine sand – I use bathing sand for hamsters and chincillas bought from Pets at Home…!
I then stick a little railway ballast into the mix, whilst wet.
Once dry, I wash with Woodland Scenics earth undercoat – this also seals the sand in. Leave 24 hours to dry.
There are three levels of drybrushing next – VGC Heavy Goldbrown, followed by VGC Elf Flesh and finally VGC Bone White.
I then use watered down Woodland Scenics Scenic Glue (like PVA, but it drys perfectly Matt) and add some static grass (I use the summer grass blend from Baccus…it is expensive, but I like it).
Finally, I do a couple of light sprays of Vallejo Matt Varnish (hard to get these days, but i prefer it to Army Painter).
That’s it for now – I have another 4 bases on the “almost finished” table, so will do another update later in the week….
Graeme Carroll
Do you apply the Pollyfilla etc around the figures that have already been glued onto the base? If so, is that tricksy, do you use a narrow blade to get between figures etc?
Hi Zoltan, yes I do indeed – I use cheap cocktail sticks, and yes it is tricky…care and patience really, thats all. I like the pollyfilla as it strengthens the bases and gives a bit of weight….
They are excellent. I look forward to seeing them in the (Sunny Skintone) flesh.
