A new game for us tonight – we have been itching to give Grimdark Future, from One Page Rules, a go – and it didn’t disappoint!
The rules themselves can be downloaded for free at https://onepagerules.com/portfolio/grimdark-future/ with an expanded (paid for, but cheap) version available at Wargames Vault.
The game itself is asset of rules for science fiction combat, but looking at the available (free) army lists, it is clearly meant to be used as an alternative to Warhammer 40K. It is played over 4 turns…yes, only 4, so you need to get a lick on…a random number of objective markers are placed, and the winner is the person who controls the most of these at the end of the 4th turn. Sounds simple enough, but the game has a tactical depth to it that isn’t apparent when reading the rules.
The game we played was Battle Brothers (aka Space Marines) vs. Plague Disciples (aka Plague Marines).
We got a couple of things wrong with the rules (Rending and Ambush), but all in all a very successful tryout…..and the game itself….well, the Battle Brothers took 3 objectives, to the Plague Disciples 1 for a comprehensive, though “Pyrrhic” victory as they lost both their commander and their Dreadnaught in the process.
